Festive Food Season is in Full Swing – Here’s how to Jump Start a Healthier New Year during the Holidays

With all the parties and family gatherings this time of year, it seems almost counterproductive to focus on healthy foods. But the holidays are an ideal time to adopt new habits when you think about it. Try these satisfying strategies for healthier holiday fare and give yourself a jumpstart on a healthful 2023.

We love a good party!

Portion Control.  When celebrating a family meal or at a party, pick a smaller plate and use a “sampling” mindset as you choose your food. By helping yourself to bite-size servings, you can try and taste lots of delicious meals, goodies, and desserts without regret.

Mindful Eating.  Taking the time to slowly savor the food you eat, and pausing to socialize and converse, allows your body to sense what you’ve eaten and provide feedback when you’re full.

Allow Fruit & Veggies to Take Center Stage.  When you’re planning your meals during the holiday season, be sure to emphasize putting plants on your plate. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy oils provide the vitamins, minerals, and fiber for healthy blood pressure, weight & digestion.

Add the Heat.  Serving up special meals is a great time to include more spices to your diet and favorite recipes. Spices contain anti-oxidants, flavonoids, and other compounds that can improve mood and benefit inflammation regulation.

Stay Hydrated.  While ’tis the season to raise a glass and toast our family and friends, ensuring that you are drinking enough water will keep your body hydrated and help keep you from overindulging during the holidays.

Practicing healthy eating while you enjoy the events and celebrations of the season will propel you into the new year with healthy momentum.
